Fitness After 50 - Personal Training Success Story - Priscilla C.

From injured and worried to self-sufficient and thriving

Priscilla C.

Priscilla’s story is one we hear all too often. She’d been working with a trainer at another gym. The style of workouts they offered were high intensity intervals. It was very demanding, which led to fast results. But it also led Priscilla to injury and burnout. 🙁

“I did enjoy the workouts for the first little while, and I did start to see some change. Yet it ended up becoming too much and it led me to get injured and have to stop altogether. The silver lining was it did give me a bit of confidence knowing that I can get results.”

Priscilla was a hard working mom who had difficulty finding time for herself. She never prioritized herself and lacked the time to seek extra help. These are common road blocks for many moms.

“I wanted to achieve a healthy functional body. I wanted to lose some weight, and learn more about (fitness) and how to find out what works best for me.”

About 5 years ago, it became a priority. After Priscilla found herself in the hospital with toxic shock syndrome.

It was after this event that she realized she wanted to become self-sufficient. She wanted to take better care of herself.

“I took care of my parents as they aged and now I see some of my friends beginning to slow down and have issues. I want to be able to keep up with my grandchildren.”

The time was now for Priscilla to seek out the extra help and guidance she was looking for.

Where to begin? 🤷‍♀️

Priscilla has always been an avid walker and hiker. Now she can go further and take on more challenging trails without hesitation.

Priscilla has always been an avid hiker/power walker. Now she can take on even larger challenges!

After stopping her HIIT classes and seeing a physiotherapist, she was ready to start over. Now retired and with an empty nest, she had time to focus on herself.

But Priscilla didn’t know where to start. She knew getting injured and falling off track was not the right path.

“I didn’t feel like I had the knowledge base or the confidence to go at it on my own. I knew I needed a personal program, and a human on the other side. Not an online general program to follow (i.e. Youtube). (Before) I couldn’t commit and put myself first. After I retired and had more time, I realized how important it was. I was ready to focus on myself.”

New Neighbourhood, New Opportunity 🏡

After moving into a new place down the street from Evertrain, the name sparked some interest. Being the avid walker she is, she passed by many times and got a little more curious each time.

It was after reading an article on Evertrain in the Manor Park Chronicle that she decided it was time to give us a call.

The focus on the fifty-plus people was an immediate draw to her. The search was over. Evertrain had a new member in the community!

One Foot in Front of The Other 👣

Priscilla’s original goals included weight loss, gaining muscle, and avoiding injury. She also wanted to begin a thorough knowledge quest of fitness and nutrition.

Things began slowly, but that didn’t discourage Priscilla. She began working with us once a week, and was making the most of her in-gym session. But the results were a bit sluggish. About two months in to her new journey, something clicked.

Priscilla purchased equipment for her at-home gym. She took part in nutritional classes, seminars, and cooking classes. She went from resistance training once a week, to three times a week. Priscilla got the ball rolling down the hill, and it kept rolling. 😀

She experienced a surge of motivation, energy, and results. Which became a positive feedback loop! Feeling good, getting results, and motivation all compound on each other.

The best part? Priscilla was learning and soaking in the new information and knowledge she acquired. This was a whole new learning experience for her and she was enjoying every step of the way.

Priscilla’s Progress and Experience 💪

The program included daily cardio, resistance training three times a week, and mobility/stretching. The commitment shown from Priscilla was truly inspiring.

Priscilla would do a mobility workout each morning, followed by her resistance training on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, followed up by a walk of over an hour. Priscilla took the ‘saying you get out what you put in’ quite literally!

She was able to shed 24 pounds and while gaining lean muscle.

What Priscilla was always appreciative of was the ability of her coach to help her adjust and manage her program.

”I have a recurring knee issue. Before I would have been afraid to do a squat. Now with Evertrain’s guidance, we adapt, modify, and keep making progress all while managing my knee.”

Knowing that Evertrain would be there every step of the way, Priscilla kept making great strides and felt great the entire time.

“The focus of safety and preparation is amazing. It makes me feel confident about proceeding and I’m able to keep going because I know I won’t get injured (unnecessarily).”

Priscilla also had a huge change in her overall posture and body structure due to her will and commitment.

”I didn’t even realize it. but my best friend pointed it out to me. She said, ‘Priscilla, the curve in your back is gone! I thought you were born with that!’.”

Priscilla had a slight exaggeration of curvature in her lower thoracic/lumbar spine area. She credits her chiropractor and Evertrain coach Kyle for the changes she felt.

Excited for the Future 😀

Her newfound confidence, results, and positive mindset have Priscilla ready to take on the future.

”I want to keep exploring new options, exercises, and ways of doing things. I feel like I’ve been learning a lot from Kyle. I have more confidence in deciding what works best for me and my body. I’m much more in tune with my body rather than just blindly following a program. I will become an expert in my own fitness world.”

Priscilla also already has started to plan how she will be a great role model for her young grandchildren and set a foundation for them growing up.

“I want to be able to keep up with my grandchildren and introduce them into exercise and fitness as well.”

“I’m happier with my life doing this program. I have been learning about what I can do and what I want to do. I can still live my life and have fun, all while working on the physical fitness safely.”

If you’re not sure what to do next

We asked Priscilla if she had any advice or words she would give to someone who may be starting out in a similar situation as she did.

“Get started and don’t stop. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you’ll have to work through some things. Whatever you are doing, don’t give up on yourself, the only way up is to exercise and keep moving!".
